ONE OF metal’s most influential outfits, Newcastle’s Venom have had a lasting impact on some of rock’s biggest names, including Metallica, Megadeth & Slayer, and the weight of their recorded output (starting with the wonderfully disturbing ‘Welcome To Hell’ in 1981) continues to be deeply felt.

With Cronos once again fronting the three-man line-up and latest studio album (‘Fallen Angels’) showing a welcome return to the raw blend of heavy metal & punk that got them noticed in the first place, Venom are unbowed in their desire to carry the torch for ‘Old Nick’ and darker forces in general.

Fast, furious, tight & terrifying, not to mention the force behind an entire musical genre (‘Black Metal’, the title of their classic ’82 album), Venom are still making one hell of a glorious racket, with Cronos’ signature ‘bulldozer bass’ well to the fore.

Long may they reign (in hell).
